The rapid development of brain image techniques has empowered the research of human brain. Data from modern brain image techniques also advances our knowledge in human cognition, emotion and reward behavior.

There are several types of image modality which may indicate different brain function and clinical meanings. Magnetic resonance image (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) are two of them which provide most powerful information for human brain research. In this presentation I will firstly give a brief history regarding the application of MRI and PET in human brain research. I will subsequently focus on how to use PET to approach human brain. This will cover the basic principle and the studies of biomarker for cognitive function and emotional changes in mental disorders.

Lastly, a potential role of hybrid PET/MRI in the neuroscience research will be delineated and discussed. Since there is a huge gap for the clinical application of current brain image techniques a new strategy toward clinical application will be proposed. The overall aim of this presentation will be the educational purpose for graduate student instead of in-depth knowledge about PET research because, as I know, the PET machine will not be feasible for this institute.
