Paradoxical observations from single case studies on spatial perception

Speaker:
Professor Ernst Poppel
National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, Germany
Time: 02:00 pm – 03:00 pm
Date: 10.December.2019
Location: Science Building #4, S4-209, NCU (中央大學科四館209室)

A seminar was held dated on 10.12.2019 at the department of Cognitive neuroscience, which was attended together by students of Cognitive Neuroscience NCU as well as students of Yang Ming University. The distinguished guest speaker of the seminar was Dr. Ernst Poppel, professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Institute of Medical Psychology. He is also associate member of Munich center for neuroscience. In addition he is playing a role of Head of Research Group Systems Neuroscience and Cognitive Research. He welcomed the participants and presented an interesting topic “Paradoxical observations from single case studies on spatial perception” to all.

He started his talk by sharing his experiences in the field of psychology, physics and cognitive neuroscience. He shared that psychology does not seem to be fundamentally different from physics; mental phenomena appear to be directly related to physical reality. He also shared that being a creature we are living in space and time. Advance technologies change the ways in which we perceive space and time, but cannot eliminate the fact that we live in space and time. On the basis of different experiments he conclude that that even though mental processes in the space and time domain are obviously not directly accessible, this should not be considered as an impenetrable barrier to unravel the mechanism of mental processes. He shared his previous and current findings. At the end he sum up his talk by sharing that new discovery on visual completion provides insight into structural and functional elements of the human visual system with psychophysical methods only. The seminar was ended with a Question and Answering session, in which the students showed interests about his talk by asking more questions. By attending the seminar, we hope together we can acquire a view in the related field.
