A seminar was held dated on 5th November, 2019, which was attended together by students of Cognitive Neuroscience as well students of Biomedical Engineering from the Department of Health Science and Technology, National Central University. The distinguished guest speaker of the seminar was Dr. Woei-Jer Chuang Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, National Cheng Kung University.
Prof. Woei-Jer Chuang presented an interesting topic in the domain of Integrin-specific disintegrins for cancer therapy. The findings he shared were of high interest for all participants. He shared his views that Integrin’s control differing capacities in cancer pathology and in tumor cell improvement and contribute to vital forms such as cell shape, survival, expansion, translation, angiogenesis, relocation, and intrusion. Integrin’s are basically transmembrane proteins. He also shared that till now in mammals, at least 24 integrin’s have been identified. He conclude his talk by his different research findings that multivalent design can increase the activity of integring-specific disintegrin and Fn3 variants.Tri-specific anti-integrin’s and VEGF protein can significantly reduce the growth of U87 glioma tumor and increase the survival in xenograft animal model. There results were confirmed with mouse and pig models. Furthermore, he explained that we have successfully designed an antiplatelet agent, an integrin αllbβ3 –specific disintegrin variant, which exhibit low risk of bleeding and longer half-life in comparison with current antiplatelet agents. The agent can be delivered by iv and im injections. The seminar was ended with a Question and Answering session, in which the students showed interests about his talk by asking more questions. By attending the seminar, we hope we can acquire a view in the mechanism of designing an antiplatelet agent to treat tumor growth.
