Speaker:
Prof. Jimmy Ming-Jung Chuang
Department of Surgery, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
Time: 02.00 pm - 04.00 pm
Date: 29th October, 2019
Location: Science building#4, S4-209, NCU(中央大學科四館209室)

A distinguished seminar was held dated 29th October, 2019 at the department of Cognitive neuroscience, which was attended together by students of Cognitive Neuroscience NCU as well as students of Yang Ming University. The distinguished guest speaker of the seminar was Prof Jimmy Ming-Jung Chuang, Neurosurgeon at department of surgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. He welcomed to the all participants and presented an interesting topic Applications of signal processing in advanced epilepsy surgery to all.

Prof. Jimmy delivered the lecture and shared his views about one of the chronic neurological disorder i.e. Epilepsy. Most individual react successfully to anti-seizure drugs with in first two years of treatment. While those who don’t respond favorably to anti-seizure drugs treatment needs to be explored for surgery and other alternative forms of treatment. Surgical therapy is an important and underutilized treatment in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. However, how to limit the region of epileptogenic cortex is still an unsolved problem. Because there is no single tool which can define the epileptogenic zone. He also shared his different research findings done in USA in the related field and concludes that; we now understand that epilepsy is a network disease. At the end, he shared that new engineering technique and computer science may give us a new tool or another window to find out the exact answer for current difficulties with defining epileptogenic zone, finding out the lesion, recognizing the network and mapping the functional area. The seminar was ended with a Question and Answering session, in which students showed interests in his talk by asking more questions. In the post-seminar session, he shared his life story and how he fascinated by neuroscience.
